چکیده

Cellular, laptop, tablet and handheld devices support WLAN technology. In addition to the spectral efficiency and security issues, power consumption is a vital issue in making the usage of these devices widespread. Efforts are underway in improving power conservation in those devices and thus increasing the duration between recharging the battery. Power consumption is mainly due to the transmission of WLAN packets and the receiver listening and receiving packets. Internet packets contain several headers for routing required in a complex network. Those networks are mostly wired networks using TCP/IP protocol. The WLAN transmitter is encapsulating all the TCP/IP headers and adding its own WLAN header. In some cases, the combined headers length represents a significant portion of the total frame length. This paper focuses on reducing the combined headers length with different compression methods. Smaller headers imply smaller packets which take less time to transmit and therefore activate the power hungry WLAN transmitter for a shorter time. The receiver on time is also reduced using overhearing avoidance techniques. The performance of those new methods is evaluated using both simulation and analytical models. Both the simulation and the analytical WLAN power estimation were developed for this paper. The simulation and the analytical models concord and show that if those methods are combined, they can provide up to 30% power consumption reduction for high load and many active stations present on the same channel.

On implementation and improvement of robust header compression in UMTS

IP protocol overheads are large and need to be compressed when used in UMTS to save radio resources. A robust header compression scheme (ROHC) has been proposed to provide high compression efficiency and high robustness. We study the performance of ROHC in the paper and investigate how to adjust some compression parameters that are recommended as implementation-dependent according to the ROHC s...

A Novel Compression Scheme for Mpeg-4 Headers for Visual Communication

Overheads associated with MPEG-4 video compressed packets reduce bandwidth efficiency. Mobile operators may save a significant percentage of the required bandwidth using IP header compression technologies, and thereby reduce necessary investments. In this paper, a novel header compression scheme for MPEG-4 video packets is proposed and analysed. It is designed to complement existing IP header c...

A Survey of Bandwidth Optimization Techniques and Patterns in VoIP Services and Applications

As Internet Telephony unveils a communication system that allows for the conduction and reception of voice signals and data over the internet network, the volume of voice traffic and (or) packets on IP networks have grown substantially. However, a crucial problem imminent is that of inefficient bandwidth utilization which is mostly as a result of header overheads resulting from the attachment o...

Power Saving in Wireless VoIP 6.829 Project

This paper reviews existing power management techniques on wireless LAN and verifies the effects of different power management techniques applied to the case for VoIP over WiFi through experiments. Voice communication imposes timely constraints such as short time interval between packets and the need to be always listening for potential incoming connections. It also poses opportunities related ...

Implementation and Evaluation of the Enhanced Header Compression (IPHC) for 6LoWPAN

6LoWPAN defines how to carry IPv6 packets over IEEE 802.15.4 low power wireless or sensor networks. Limited bandwidth, memory and energy resources require a careful application of IPv6 in a LoWPAN. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard defines a maximum frame size of 127 bytes that decreases to 102 bytes considering the header overhead. A further reduction is due to the security, network and transport pro...
